How do I dispose of Nicorette®?
>Used Nicorette® pieces should be placed in a wrapper and disposed of in such a way to prevent its access by children or pets. See patient information for further directions for handling and disposal.
Why is Nicorette® not recommended for smokers under the age of 18?
The FDA prohibits the sale of nicotine products to individuals under 18 years of age.
What happens to the nicotine that is not absorbed into the bloodstream (4 mg. delivers 3 mg. of nicotine to the bloodstream, and 2 mg. delivers 1 mg. of nicotine to the bloodstream)?
A small percent may stay in the gum depending on how it is chewed. The rest goes into the saliva, is swallowed, and absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract.
Will the yellow dye in Nicorette® stain teeth?
No, because the colorant is water-soluble and it is in a very low concentration in each piece.
What color is Nicorette® Gum?
2mg. Nicorette® is beige and 4mg. Nicorette® is yellow in color.
How should Nicorette® be stored?
Do not store above 86 degrees F (30 C) because the nicotine in Nicorette® is sensitive to heat. Protect from light. Additionally, do not store out of the blister. Once removed from the protective pack, Nicorette® should be used promptly since nicotine is volatile and may lose strength when exposed to air.
Can someone who's really addicted use both the patch and the gum?
No, Nicorette® is not approved for use in conjunction with any other NRT product. Smokers who are "really addicted" should consult their health care professional for additional help.
Can you overdose on Nicorette®?
You should not smoke while using Nicorette® gum. It is possible to get too much nicotine, especially if you use Nicorette® gum and smoke at the same time.
Overdose may occur if you chew many pieces of Nicorette® at one time or if you chew many pieces one right after another.
If a child chews or swallows one or more pieces of Nicorette®, contact a Poison Control Center, or contact your doctor immediately.
What is nicotine?
Nicotine is an alkaloid, one of a group of organic chemicals found in plants.
What are the benefits of nicotine gum versus a nicotine patch?
Nicotine gum offers self-administered dosing, meets oral gratification needs and provides alternatives for quitters at high risk for transdermal-related skin irritation.
Can pregnant women use Nicorette® Gum?
Pregnant women are urged to quit smoking without nicotine replacement therapy. We advise them to seek the counsel of a health care professional before using this product.
How many pieces of Nicorette® should I chew per day?
Weeks 1-6: 1 piece every 1 to 2 hours
Weeks 7-9: 1 piece every 2 to 4 hours
Weeks 10-12: 1 piece every 4-8 hours
Do not chew more than 24 pieces per day. Do not chew Nicorette® longer than 12 weeks.
Why can't I eat or drink 15 minutes before chewing Nicorette®?
The absorption of Nicorette® is reduced by many foods or drinks.
What should I do on my quit date?
Ask your family, friends and co-workers to support you in your efforts to stop smoking. Throw away all of your cigarettes, matches, lighters, ashtrays, etc. Keep busy on your quit day. Exercise, go to a movie, take a walk, get together with friends.
How do I reduce my Nicorette® usage?
Try chewing each piece of Nicorette® for only 10 to 15 minutes, instead of 1/2 hour. Then, gradually reduce the number of pieces used.
Try chewing each piece for longer than 1/2 hour, but reduce the number of pieces you use each day.
Substitute ordinary chewing gum for some of the Nicorette® pieces you would normally use. Increase the number of pieces of ordinary gum as you cut back on the Nicorette® pieces.
How long should I wait after chewing Nicorette® before I can smoke a cigarette?
Returning to smoking soon after using Nicorette® may result in side effects, since the nicotine is absorbed faster and to a greater extent from smoking a cigarette. Waiting 2-4 hours, or longer, may minimize the risk of these side effects.
Can you drink alcohol while taking Nicorette®?
Yes, you may drink alcohol responsibly during the Nicorette® treatment phase, just NOT while Nicorette® is actually in the mouth. Most beverages, including alcohol, are strongly acidic by nature. So all beverages have to be avoided 15 minutes before using Nicorette® not only because the pH is too low for absorption, but because you are likely swallowing the nicotine, which would not be absorbed since the liver quickly deactivates the majority of orally ingested nicotine. Therefore, do not drink any beverages 15 minutes before or during use of Nicorette® gum, or it won't be absorbed.
I've tried quitting several times, but I always seem to fall back to old habits. Why can't I quit for good?
Smoking tobacco is a true drug dependency because of its active agent, nicotine. It is the high levels of nicotine in cigarettes that cause the addiction. Nicotine replacement therapies (such as Nicorette® gum or the NicoDerm CQ patch) use a low dose of nicotine, and are FDA-approved smoking cessation aids that let you wean yourself from nicotine.
Don't give up trying to quit just because you have gone back to smoking. A relapse is an incidence smokers often encounter during the quitting process. Remember each quitting attempt will take you one step closer to quitting for good.
