New officers begin terms at ADEA annual meeting
By Karen Fox
New Orleans — The American Dental Education Association installed a new slate of officers at its annual meeting here last month.
Dr. James Q. Swift, University of Minnesota School of Dentistry professor and director of the UM Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, was installed as the ADEA president March 21.
Dr. Charles N. Bertolami, University of California at San Francisco School of Dentistry dean and professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, was installed as president-elect.
Dr. Swift was a member of ADEA's Section on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Anesthesia/Hospital Dentistry and also on the Administrative Board for the Council of Hospitals and Advanced Education Programs. He was the vice president for the council from 2002-05 and served on the ADEA board of directors.
Dr. Bertolami — who became UCSF's dean in 1995 — has served on the faculties at the University of Connecticut, Harvard University and the University of California-Los Angeles, where he was chair of oral and maxillofacial surgery, chief of the UCLA Medical Center's Dental Service and associate dean for faculty affairs. He will become ADEA president in 2008.
Also in New Orleans, Dr. Ronald L. Rupp, Dr. Diane C. Hoelscher and Joseph A. Field were elected ADEA vice presidents.
Dr. Rupp became ADEA vice president for the Corporate Council and will serve a three-year term on the ADEA board. He is the senior manager of professional relations at GlaxoSmithKline.
Dr. Hoelscher was elected ADEA vice president for faculties and begins a three-year term on the ADEA board. She is the chair of the Department of Patient Management and associate professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
Mr. Field was elected ADEA vice president for students. He is a third-year student at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry, who now holds a one-year term on the ADEA board.
