Senior Smiles names grant recipients

Alliance members, volunteer dentists work together in 18 programs nationwide

By Stacie Crozier

The Alliance of the American Dental Association has awarded grants to 18 programs nationwide that will give older adults something to smile about.

The Senior Smiles program, now in its second year, was transformed into a grant program for 2007 that will distribute oral health product kits to more than 11,000 seniors and educational materials to grant recipients' communities to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health for older adults.

"In 2006, 10,000 home-bound seniors in 31 states across the nation received Senior Smiles oral health care kits," said Sharen Grubb, AADA president.

"In 2007 the Senior Smiles program has been re-tooled in a grant format and more than 11,000 kits will be distributed, with more emphasis on collaboration between Alliance members and dental health professionals across the country. We are very excited to see the Senior Smiles project expanded, because it fits so well with the ADA's new elder care initiative."

GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare and Sullivan-Schein, a Henry Schein Co., are sponsors.

"The Senior Smiles program is a great example of how the dental team, in this case the Alliance, helps support the oral health needs of our community," said Steven Kess, vice president, professional relations, Henry Schein. "The mission of this program is in alignment with our Henry Schein Cares focus on 'helping health happen.' We are very proud of the program and its growth over the past two years."
