A common concern of edentulous patients who wear complete dentures is loose fit
and the pain that can be associated with it. Denture instability can cause
abrasions and inflammation of the tissues, resulting in discomfort.1
In combination with the effects of aging, it can also reduce a patient's bite
force.2
In many cases, patient concerns over denture instability can be reduced or
prevented by educating the patient in proper neuromuscular control over new
dentures, by demonstrating effective mastication techniques, and by reassuring
the patient that slight anterior or retromolar pressure may create a small and
normal movement of the denture itself.1 Yet studies demonstrate that
stability of prosthesis enables denture wearers to increase their confidence,
both in social situations and in their over-all quality of life.3
An option that clinical data suggests can assist in denture stability-- as well
in increasing patient satisfaction with their dentures-- is the use of
fixatives (such as denture adhesives). While some dental professionals may view
the use of a fixative as an indicator of failed or poorly-fitting dentures,
others are beginning to witness the ways fixatives can help when used in
conjunction with denture therapy. Clinical studies demonstrate that fixatives
can improve patients' bite efficacy, even with dentures that are clinically
correct. And when a fixative is in use, patients report feeling greater
confidence with their dentures and less food entrapment.1
