Orthodontic discomfort is a common response to the adjustment of braces.
Typically, irritation is greatest when braces are initially put on, and then
when they are adjusted during the course of treatment. Patients may experience
teeth sensitivity for three to five days after adjustment, and irritation of
the lips, cheeks and tongue for one to two weeks.1
For patients concerned about discomfort, the American Association of
Orthodontists recommends they take the same type of pain medication they would
ordinarily use for a headache. 1 But for the mouth irritation associated with
braces, there are a number of products available to ease the gingival
irritations caused by minor dental and orthodontic procedures.
Just one, Gly-Oxide®, contains 10% carbamide peroxide, a proven oral
debriding agent and wound cleanser, to help soothe painful irritations and
promote natural healing. And because it also cleans stained dental appliances
such as orthodontics, it can help improve oral hygiene better than brushing
alone, and guard against infections in the mouth and gums.
